In a post-pandemic world, one luxury has emerged as a priority as well as a privilege: travel. While spending on art and cars has softened somewhat, per last year’s luxury report from Bain & Company and Altagamma, those funds have been reassigned to experiences, with outlays up across the sector: on private jets (+11 percent), on high-end hospitality (+7 percent), and on luxury cruises (+12 percent).

There has never been a better time to open a hotel, but then there has also never been more competition. The pipeline for five-star hotels hit record levels late last year: There were more than 1,300 projects looming in Q4 2025, noted data tracker Lodging Econometrics, which is a rise of 8 percent year over year.

There’s ferocious demand for the best places to stay, but it’s a crowded field jostling for those overnights. Standing out, then, is a true feat—as each of these properties has done, in its own distinctive way. We deemed just 16 worthy of the Best of the Best accolade, from urban hotels and resort properties to private villas and a remarkable new train. If you’re making travel plans any time soon, be sure at least one of these is on your itinerary.


Rosewood is notoriously picky about locations, and [its first debut winter resort](https://robbreport.com/travel/hotels/rosewood-courchevel-le-jardin-alpin-opening-1237617313/) is a testament to that. It’s not only in the most glamorous village of the French Alps’ glitziest ski enclave, but it’s also set close to the gondolas on the most desirable stretch of slope in the tony Le Jardin Alpin neighborhood. Though the property is not as high as Le K2, it has better views than the nearby Cheval Blanc.

Interior designer Tristan Auer (whom Rosewood also tapped to remake the Crillon in Paris) composed a take on the region’s classic chalets that blends natural materials—Vals quartzite for architect Imaad Rahmouni’s facade, richly veined marble, and bush-hammered bluestone—with midcentury furnishings and one-of-a-kind art. The suspended crystalline installations in the lobby are a site-specific work from Danish Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. Each of the 51 rooms and suites has its own private terrace or balcony for the unmissable mountain vistas, and there are three over-the-top villas, too: The standout is Saluire House, with its Murano-made floating art hanging.

The 200 miles of the Riviera Nayarit, just north of Puerto Vallarta, are rapidly seeing the arrival of a cluster of five-star properties within ritzy gated communities. Skip them all, and head to [Siari](https://robbreport.com/travel/hotels/ritz-carlton-reserve-siari-mexico-1237379599/) in the northernmost section of Nauka. It’s the latest outpost of Ritz-Carlton’s swankier sibling, Reserve, and more than matches the eight others elsewhere.
