Announced August 28, 2026, The Red Sea Edition opens its doors as the inaugural resort on Shura Island, a pivotal component of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea destination. This development is heralded as a "new era of luxury" for the Kingdom's "flagship regenerative tourism development," as Sleeper Magazine reports.

The 240-key hotel, conceptualized by Rockwell Group, draws its aesthetic from the Red Sea's raw landscape. Interiors, according to Sleeper Magazine, blend coral stone, rammed earth, natural oak, and woven textures, reflecting a design journey from "rock to sand to sea." The resort is part of the broader Shura Island masterplan, overseen by Foster + Partners.

Comprising 240 guestrooms, including 53 suites, the accommodations span beachfront and golf-facing pavilions. The architecture, featuring "distinctive shell-inspired rooftops and low-rise architecture," is designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural setting, Sleeper Magazine notes. The Lobby’s design is inspired by the "sculptural qualities of the dunes," leading to waterfront venues like Jiwa Terrace and Jiwa Beach Club. Sleeper Magazine describes the terrace with a "wide timber canopy, with hanging reeds that drop down from the roof beams to create a seamless edge to the beachfront."

Guestrooms, built around a 'sand grain' concept, employ coral stone flooring and natural oak to cultivate a residential atmosphere. Larger suites, as Sleeper Magazine explains, are housed under individual "clamshells" for enhanced privacy. Rather than overt regional iconography, the design prioritizes local materials and references to foster a personalized, intimate connection to the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the property lies The Recovery Dome, an architectural focal point dedicated to movement, mindfulness, and restoration, offering sweeping island vistas. Complementing this, The Spa and The Gym provide serene spaces, designed to harmonize with Shura Island's natural beauty, providing a tranquil contrast to the destination's adventure-focused offerings.

Our take: Marriott's Edition brand has proven adept at blending local context with understated luxury. The challenge in Saudi Arabia, particularly within a mega-project like The Red Sea, will be to maintain that distinctive, subtle identity amidst grander, government-backed ambitions. The focus on local materials and integrated architecture suggests a thoughtful approach, but the true test will be how the property cultivates an authentic sense of place beyond the press releases.
