- The hotel offers sensational views of the fjord, the charming harborfront, and the striking mountains beyond.

- A loaded breakfast spread with charcuterie, local salmon, and Faroese pancakes fortifies travelers for packed days of hiking and exploration.

- The on-site spa has a sauna, a steam room, and a relaxation lounge, with an outdoor pool planned for 2027.

The views from my room at KG Hotel in Klaksvík entranced me straight away: waterfalls rushed past colorful rows of houses, stratified along the mountains that loomed over the town. I quickly learned that weather conditions on the Faroe Islands, a remote archipelago between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic, are temporary. Foggy and wispy one second, gloomy and storming with fierce rain the next, followed by a quick reprieve of sunshine and blue skies.

When KG Hotel opened in Klaksvík, it became the archipelago’s first high-end hotel outside of the capital Tórshavn. The property’s location on the island of Borðoy, part of the six Northern Islands, provides a convenient launch pad for exploring this untamed region.

Klaksvík is the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands—in these remote environs, that means a population of about 5,000—and is sandwiched between two narrow, fjord-finger inlets with houses stretching up the cliffsides. KG Hotel’s architect, Ósbjørn Jacobsen of the design firm Henning Larsen, did a masterful job of bringing those awe-inspiring surroundings in, with captivating views from every room and public space.

“The starting point was the mountain-and-fjord topography that surrounds Klaksvík, and the idea was to create a building that feels connected to its setting rather than competing with it,” says general manager Eikur Jákupsson.

The hotel’s stark, wooden facade is set against the mountains and the water beyond. Inside, the glass ceiling of a large lobby atrium and the wooden slats lining the interior hallways and staircases immediately caught my eye. With seating nooks aplenty, this area serves as a communal gathering place and the hotel’s hub. This is not a hotel focused on delivering over-the-top luxuries or indulgences, meant to keep you inside; rather, it highlights the destination, encouraging guests to immerse themselves in it.
