Belmond announced on January 15, 2026, the appointment of Steve Mitchell — known as Mitch — as Managing Director, Global Lodges. This move signals Belmond's intent to aggressively expand its global lodge offerings and solidify its position in the "Slow Luxury" sector.
Mitchell's mandate includes not only steering the development of future Belmond lodges but also overseeing the brand's existing safari properties in Botswana: Eagle Island Lodge and Savute Elephant Lodge. According to Hospitality Net, his focus will be on enhancing both guest and employee experiences, while also cultivating relationships with trade partners, local communities, and non-profits to ensure sustainable contributions in Botswana.
Mitchell brings a notable track record, most prominently as co-founder and CEO of Angama. Hospitality Net reports that he transformed Angama from a startup into a respected African safari brand, known for its personalized service and intentional impact during his twelve-year tenure. This included developing properties in East African locations like Kenya's Maasai Mara and Amboseli, and establishing the Angama Foundation for education, healthcare, and conservation initiatives.
Our take: Belmond's choice of Mitchell indicates a clear strategy to deepen its commitment to experiential luxury rooted in nature and community. His background with Angama, a brand synonymous with high-end, purpose-driven safaris, positions him well to expand Belmond's lodge footprint while maintaining the luxury segment's increasing demand for authentic engagement and sustainable practices.
