Announced May 24, 2026, La Zambra, an Unbound Collection by Hyatt property, has transformed the storied Byblos Hotel into a serene Mediterranean hideaway. Tucked into the Andalusian hills outside Mijas, this property offers a distinct alternative to the typical Costa del Sol beach scene, surrounded instead by golf courses and open countryside. The Independent notes its appeal as a destination for "switching off rather than purely a beach break."

The journey to La Zambra is straightforward, with direct flights from London Heathrow or Gatwick to Malaga Airport taking under three hours. From Malaga, the hotel is a roughly 25-minute drive. While public transport options exist, taking a taxi or arranging hotel pickup is advisable, particularly with luggage.

Previously a hedonistic playground for the likes of Mick Jagger, Julio Iglesias, and even Princess Diana in the 1980s and 90s, the property retains a subtle rock'n'roll undercurrent beneath its current "Bohemia meets barefoot luxury" aesthetic, as The Independent describes. Its redesign emphasizes calming and inviting details: a lavender-lined driveway, low-slung whitewashed buildings, and interiors featuring earthy textures, soft linens, and rattan.

Our take: The revitalization of such an iconic property is always compelling. La Zambra’s success hinges on its ability to truly shed its raucous past while honoring its legacy, providing a genuine sense of seclusion and refined comfort without feeling sterile. The balance between family-friendly amenities and a genuinely relaxing wellness atmosphere, as highlighted by The Independent's reviewer, is crucial for its target demographic.
