Luxury Hotels Become Tour Operators

High-end hospitality brands are curating multi-property itineraries, packaging bespoke experiences with stays at their most exclusive addresses. This new approach blurs the lines between hotelier and luxury tour operator, redefining premium travel.

This week, luxury hotel brands are embracing the role of tour operator, creating multi-destination itineraries that combine stays at their various properties with private experiences and local access, as reported by travelweekly.com.

Four Seasons, Fairmont, and Rosewood are leading this shift, crafting bespoke journeys that transcend traditional hotel bookings. According to travelweekly.com, Marc Speichert, Four Seasons' executive vice president and chief commercial officer, notes a growing demand for multi-property stays. He emphasizes that these itineraries are "crafted by our teams who live and work in each destination, never outsourced to third parties."

Four Seasons launched its Connected Experiences program late last year, initially featuring itineraries in Bali, Spain, and Mexico. The Bali journey, for instance, begins at the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, offering private yoga or fishing. Guests then transfer to the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan via a private raft on the Ayung River.

The Spanish itinerary pairs the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid with the Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor. Experiences include a private pre-opening tour of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over Segovia. The Mexican experience starts at the Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, offering a tour of Colombian artist Fernando Botero's home and a sunrise visit to the Teotihuacan pyramids. The journey continues to the Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo and concludes at Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita.

Private transfers are part of the package, with inter-property flights varying by itinerary. Prices, as noted by travelweekly.com, begin at approximately $17,600 per room for the Spain itinerary and can reach $43,100 per room for the Mexico trip.

Our take: This strategic pivot by luxury hotel groups is a smart evolution. By controlling the entire journey, from accommodation to exclusive local access and seamless transfers, these brands are ensuring an end-to-end premium experience. It’s a direct response to the sophisticated traveler's desire for curated, hassle-free adventures, leveraging their global footprint and established service standards.
