For decades, the conversation about Italy's top design hotels revolved around Milan, Florence, and occasionally Venice, almost never Rome. As Galerie Magazine notes, the city that birthed the 'hospitium, the cauponae _and_ the imperial bathhouse' seemed to have forgotten its own legacy. The 20th century saw grand dames resting on their laurels, catering to a fleeting Hollywood crowd.

However, a significant shift has occurred since 2023. Rome now boasts a collection of hotels that finally embrace its unparalleled architectural inheritance. These range from a Fascist-era palazzo commissioned for Augustus's 2,000th birthday to a Borromini convent with original nuns’ cells, and a 16th-century cardinals’ college meticulously restored by film directors, according to Galerie Magazine.

One notable addition is the Romeo Roma, housed in Palazzo Capponi on Via di Ripetta. Zaha Hadid Architects spent over a decade on its restoration, completing what became one of Hadid’s final personal projects before her death in 2016. The firm integrated its signature parametric design by installing a "second internal skin that floats inside the original shell," as reported by Galerie Magazine. During the renovation, excavators uncovered a 1st-century Roman workshop, now viewable through the swimming pool's glazed floor.

The Romeo Roma's 56 rooms and 18 suites feature a curated art collection from Alfredo Romeo, including works by Mario Schifano and Francesco Clemente. Gastronomy is handled by Alain Ducasse, whose first Rome restaurant operates downstairs with chef Iacopo Iualè at the helm.

Our take: Rome's luxury hotel market has long been a sleeping giant. The influx of design-forward properties, particularly those that integrate rather than merely overlay modern aesthetics onto ancient sites, signifies a maturation of the city's hospitality sector. This isn't just about new hotels; it's about a renewed respect for Rome's foundational role in luxury and comfort, translating its rich history into contemporary, sophisticated experiences for discerning travelers. The Bulgari Hotel Roma and the Romeo Roma exemplify this trend, proving that the Eternal City is once again at the forefront of global luxury accommodation.
