This week, the Caribe Hilton commemorates 77 years since its inaugural opening in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As AOL.com reports, the property, launched in December 1949, was not only Hilton's first venture outside the continental U.S. but also the island's premier modern luxury accommodation, cementing its status as an enduring landmark.

Today, the resort offers 652 rooms, each boasting ocean views, alongside a secluded beach, a spa, and extensive recreational facilities including a hammock garden, basketball and volleyball courts, and multiple pools and restaurants. AOL.com notes that the hotel's cultural resonance runs as deep as its history.

Among its many distinctions, the Caribe Hilton is notably recognized as the birthplace of the Piña Colada. According to AOL.com, bartender Ramón "Monchito" Marrero crafted the first-ever version in 1954. He spent three months perfecting a welcome drink that he believed captured the essence of Puerto Rico.

The original recipe, as shared by the property with Parade, calls for two ounces of white rum, one ounce of coconut cream, one ounce of heavy cream, six ounces of fresh pineapple juice, and half a cup of crushed ice. Initially created without alcohol, it was later adapted to include rum. Puerto Rico officially named it its national drink in 1978, and the hotel now sells approximately 59,000 Piña Coladas annually.

The Caribe Hilton has long been a magnet for celebrities, described on its website as a "glam-tropical icon," hosting luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Gloria Swanson. AOL.com highlights that legendary Puerto Rican entertainer Iris Chacón, known for her record-breaking '70s and '80s variety show, performed sold-out cabaret shows at the hotel's Club Caribe.

What this means: The Caribe Hilton transcends mere luxury accommodation; it's a living piece of Caribbean history. Its blend of classic hospitality, celebrity cachet, and the creation of a global cocktail favorite solidifies its legacy, proving that true luxury often comes with an engaging narrative.
