This week, Miami's iconic Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key is slated for implosion, clearing the path for a new luxury hotel. The property, once a magnet for celebrities and gourmands, is being demolished just 26 years after its completion.

NBC 6 South Florida reports the implosion is scheduled for Sunday at 8:30 a.m., requiring all Brickell Key residents to evacuate by 7 a.m. The hotel's interiors have already been stripped in preparation for the controlled demolition, which demolition company BG Group refers to as a "controlled energetic felling."

Ivy Fradin of BG Group, as quoted by NBC 6 South Florida, emphasizes the blend of artistry and engineering involved: "I think it’s gonna have a big wow factor and I think everybody needs to know that there’s as much an artistic component as there is an engineering component, so not only is it pretty to watch, but there’s an awful lot of planning and engineering and choreography of explosives that come together to make this go successfully." Fradin also assures that the dust will dissipate rapidly and debris will remain within the project's footprint.

Our take: The demolition of a relatively young, high-profile property like the original Mandarin Oriental in Miami underscores the relentless pace of luxury development. For a brand synonymous with enduring elegance, the decision to flatten and rebuild signals an aggressive push to re-establish a cutting-edge presence in a fiercely competitive market. This isn't just an upgrade; it's a statement of intent to lead, not merely participate, in Miami's luxury landscape.
