Michelin Keys

Michelin Key Hotels: The Complete 2026 Directory

The Michelin Key is the hotel equivalent of the Michelin Star — awarded by the Guide's anonymous inspectors since 2024 against the same criteria of craft, consistency, and sense of place. Fewer than 150 properties worldwide hold Three Keys; a handful more hold Two; the rest, One.

Frequently asked

What is a Michelin Key?
A Michelin Key is the hotel equivalent of a Michelin Star, awarded by the Michelin Guide's anonymous inspectors since 2024. One Key signals a very special stay; Two Keys, an exceptional one; Three Keys, an extraordinary destination in its own right. Inspectors weigh architecture, service, sense of place, and consistency — not amenities checklists.
How many Michelin Key hotels are there?
As of the 2026 selection, the Michelin Guide has awarded Keys to roughly 2,400 hotels across more than 130 destinations. Fewer than 150 hold the maximum Three Keys, around 350 hold Two, and the rest hold One.
How are Michelin Keys different from stars?
Hotel stars (Forbes, AAA Diamond, national systems) measure service standards against checklists. Michelin Keys measure the totality of the stay — design coherence, soul, narrative — through the same anonymous inspector model used for restaurants. The two systems complement each other: many Forbes Five-Star hotels also hold One or Two Keys.
Are Michelin Key hotels worth the price?
Key-rated hotels skew expensive but not uniformly — entry-level One-Key properties can be found from around €350 a night in less expensive markets. The Key tells you the experience has been independently vetted; whether the price matches your value calculus is a separate question.
