Announced May 18, 2026, France's "Palace" hotel status, a designation exceeding standard five-star ratings, will see its list updated. This cycle marks a turning point as, for the first time in the program's history, some hotels will lose their coveted "Palace" status. Conversely, several new properties are expected to join this elite group. The full updated list is anticipated on June 2, 2026.
Since 2010, Atout France, the national tourism development agency, has bestowed the "Palace" title on hotels demonstrating exceptional service, gastronomy, and overall grandeur. It serves as a global benchmark for French luxury hospitality, distinguishing properties far beyond a conventional five-star label. While some "Palace" hotels are indeed former palaces, the designation primarily signifies an unparalleled luxury experience.
The rigorous review process for "Palace" status is not a one-time award; hotels must regularly renew their distinction. The last update to the list occurred in 2019, with the pandemic causing a delay in the subsequent review cycle, as One Mile at a Time reports. This impending update holds particular significance, given the unprecedented removal of existing "Palace" properties.
