On June 2, 2026, Silversea, the luxury expedition cruise line, announced plans to open what it claims will be the world's southernmost hotel. Located in Puerto Williams, Chile, The Cormorant at 55 South is slated for an October 2026 debut and will cater to guests embarking on Antarctic journeys.
This new property is integral to Silversea's "Antarctica Fly Cruise" program. As Parade reports, this initiative allows travelers to bypass the often tumultuous Drake Passage by flying directly to King George Island before boarding their expedition ship. The Cormorant at 55 South will function as a dedicated pre-cruise base, offering a refined starting point for Antarctica-bound adventurers.
The 150-room and suite hotel is designed to reflect the dramatic Patagonian landscape and local culture. Silversea states that its architecture and interiors will draw inspiration from the region, incorporating indigenous materials, local artwork, and expansive windows to frame views of the surrounding wilderness, aiming to immerse guests in the destination before their polar voyage.
Our take: This move solidifies Silversea's commitment to refining the luxury expedition experience. By establishing a dedicated, high-end base in Puerto Williams, they address a key pain point for Antarctic travel: the journey to the departure point. This also positions them to capitalize on the growing demand for ultra-remote, unique luxury experiences beyond the cruise itself, turning a logistical necessity into a curated destination in its own right.
