Steamboat Springs is finally getting the slopeside luxury it deserves. On September 1, 2026, The Stockman, Auberge Resorts Collection, officially broke ground, set to redefine the base area experience on Mount Werner. The nine-story development, designed by OZ Architecture of Denver with interiors by Nunzio Marc DeSantis Architects, is slated for a 2030 opening. It encompasses approximately 450,000 square feet, marking Steamboat's entry into a club Aspen, Vail, Beaver Creek, and Telluride have long enjoyed: ski-in, ski-out accommodation from a prestige brand.

The Stockman will host 59 hotel rooms and suites alongside 95 private residences, making it Auberge's third Colorado mountain outpost, joining Hotel Jerome in Aspen and Madeline in Telluride. Residence options range from studios to sprawling five-bedroom penthouses, including 13 distinctive "Barn" residences on the rooftop, which Markets of Tomorrow notes feature double-height ceilings. This architectural nod to Steamboat's ranching heritage is a compelling design choice, elevating local character to the building's most exclusive tier.

With nearly twice as many residences as hotel rooms, The Stockman is primarily a luxury residential development supported by a full-service hotel operation. This model ensures a vibrant, lived-in feel while providing the exacting standards Auberge guests expect. Amenities include direct ski-in, ski-out access with a dedicated ski concierge and multiple slopeside dining options.

A significant draw will be the Wellbeing by Auberge spa, sprawling across 10,287 square feet. This dedicated wellness space will feature a heated outdoor pool and extensive thermal bathing facilities. For events, a 6,133-square-foot floor, including a ballroom, provides substantial capacity. Markets of Tomorrow points out that such extensive facilities are key to maintaining a lively atmosphere even during shoulder seasons.

Our take: Steamboat Springs has always been defined by its authenticity and laid-back vibe, often eschewing the glitz of its Colorado counterparts. Auberge's arrival signifies a maturation for the destination, bringing world-class hospitality without, we hope, sacrificing the town's unique identity. The high ratio of residences to hotel rooms suggests a deliberate approach to long-term community integration rather than purely transient tourism. This development is not just about a new hotel; it's about Steamboat stepping confidently into the luxury market on its own terms.
