Soneva Pivots To 'Bare Luxury' With New Leadership

On June 8, 2026, Soneva, the ultra-luxury resort brand known for its properties in the Maldives, unveiled a significant transformation. Under new private equity ownership, the company is rebranding from "Barefoot Luxury" to "Bare Luxury," introducing a new operational ethos, "Just What Matters," and a refreshed logo. This shift comes as a new CEO takes the helm, signaling the end of an era for the founder-led enterprise.

For 30 years, Soneva was the personal project of founders Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmstrom Shivdasani, pioneers of sustainable luxury since their first resort opened in 1995. KSL Capital Partners, a Denver-based firm specializing in travel and leisure investments, acquired a majority stake in May 2025, after holding a minority interest since November 2019.

With the founders stepping back completely, KSL appointed Neil Gallagher as Soneva's first external CEO. Skift reports that Gallagher views the founders' core sustainability DNA as sacrosanct, but has otherwise put everything else on the table for re-evaluation.

Our take: This rebranding signifies a broader trend within ultra-luxury hospitality: a move away from prescriptive experiences towards bespoke, optionality-driven service. The challenge for Soneva, now under private equity, will be to retain the brand's distinct appeal and sustainability credentials while evolving for a new generation of discerning travelers. The "Just What Matters" mantra suggests a focus on essential, high-quality experiences, a subtle but critical distinction from the previous "Barefoot Luxury" narrative.
