Charming yellow hotel in Međimurje, Croatia, surrounded by lush greenery and vineyards.
On April 17, 2026, the Heritage Hotel Terbotz officially opened, establishing itself as a premier destination in Železna Gora, Međimurje, Croatia. This marks a significant expansion for the Jakopić family, intertwining their longstanding winemaking heritage with a high-end wellness and luxury hotel experience. Travel And Tour World reports that the opening was attended by national and local dignitaries, signaling its importance beyond a private venture.
The new hotel occupies the meticulously restored Zichy–Terbócz manor, a protected cultural monument. This refurbishment transformed the historic estate into a boutique property that retains its original architectural integrity while introducing contemporary amenities. The property offers panoramic views of the surrounding Štrigova vineyards, blending old-world charm with 21st-century comfort.
Heritage Hotel Terbotz features 16 rooms with a total capacity of 34 beds. Each room is designed to showcase the area's natural beauty. The hotel's wellness facilities include advanced saunas, professional massage services, and private in-room jacuzzis, solidifying its position as a top-tier rural retreat. These offerings complement the established culinary reputation of the nearby Terbotz restaurant.
The Jakopić family, whose viticulture roots trace back to 1908, continues its legacy through current managers Branimir and Nada Jakopić, with the next generation actively involved. Their 15 hectares of vineyards yield acclaimed wines, including Pušipel, Graševina, and Sauvignon, which have received awards from the Decanter World Wine Awards, as Travel And Tour World notes. This rich winemaking tradition is now integrated into the hotel's eno-gastronomic experience.
The €4.93 million project received substantial financial backing, with €3.48 million, approximately 70% of the total, sourced through grants from Croatian governmental and European Union funds via the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (2021–2026).
Our take: The Heritage Hotel Terbotz is a compelling addition to Croatia's luxury landscape. The fusion of a rich family winemaking history with a meticulously restored historic property and contemporary wellness amenities positions it well within the growing demand for authentic, secluded, and high-quality experiences. This development could catalyze further luxury investments in the Međimurje region, proving that heritage preservation and modern hospitality can coexist profitably.
