Six Senses Xala, part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts luxury & lifestyle portfolio, has commenced vertical construction activities for its hotel and branded residences. Located within Xala, a 3,000-acre sustainable coastal community on Mexico’s Pacific coast, the property is anticipated to welcome its first guests in March 2028, marking the brand's debut in the country.

Newsdesk of Luxury Travel Advisor reports that the design for the 51-suite Six Senses hotel has been finalised, a collaborative effort led by Xala Co-Founding Partner Juan Bremer and Combeau Murtagh Architects. The branded residences will comprise 36 oceanfront homes, situated within what Newsdesk describes as 'one of the lowest-density developments ever undertaken in Mexico', with less than 20 percent of the land allocated for construction. Each residence, designed as a single-story retreat, occupies a 3.7-acre parcel with up to 190 feet of beachfront, crafted to integrate seamlessly into the natural topography of Costalegre. Newsdesk adds that initial sales for these residences have been robust, with 10 of the first 12 homes in phase one already acquired.

Juan Bremer elaborated on the project's progression in the Luxury Travel Advisor piece, stating that 'This milestone represents years of thoughtful planning and collaboration.' He further explained that every element was approached 'with intentionality, purpose, and an understanding of how the architecture meets the land and Xala’s curated raw-nature ethos.' With design completion and initial site work concluded, Bremer noted the transition to vertical construction with a clear vision for Six Senses Xala’s regional significance.

According to Newsdesk, Six Senses Xala will uphold the brand's established focus on sustainability, wellness, and bespoke guest experiences. The property is designed to offer a holistic approach to wellbeing, featuring 'high-tech, high-touch spaces and therapies' intended to foster growth, reflection, and reconnection. For active guests, the indoor gym and fitness amenities seamlessly extend to outdoor trails, while a signature Six Senses Spa will provide a serene environment for locally inspired treatments, journeys, and multi-day wellness programmes. Newsdesk highlights the inclusion of an Alchemy Bar, which will focus on regional healing techniques and fresh, foraged ingredients, complementing the brand’s 'Eat With Six Senses' philosophy by celebrating local produce and Mexican Pacific Coast flavours.

The Xala community’s ethos informs every aspect of the destination, from density to environmental preservation, guided by long-term values. Newsdesk reports that Xala spans over 3,000 acres, offering one of the Pacific Coast’s longest stretches of continuous, secluded beach, and maintaining an environment defined by simplicity and open space. Amenities within the community include over 20 miles of mountain-biking and hiking trails, two estuaries, and four mountains offering panoramic viewpoints for activities such as sunrise walks, yoga, and wildlife observation. These natural assets are complemented by plans for 77 Rancho Estates, three beach clubs, a surf club, a farm-to-fork restaurant, a wine and spirits club, an equestrian center, and a turtle conservation camp, all designed to harmonise with the land. Newsdesk also points out that the forthcoming Costalegre airport, expected to begin local operations in 2026, will enhance connectivity without compromising Xala's secluded nature.

Newsdesk further notes that The Xala Foundation and its Sierra a Mar initiative underscore the community’s lasting commitment to ecological restoration and local empowerment. Their work encompasses educational programmes, women-led entrepreneurship, sustainable fishing efforts, and the protection and restoration of 62 miles of coastline, ensuring that Xala’s development benefits both the land and its surrounding communities.

Our take: The methodical integration of Six Senses within a larger, sustainably minded development such as Xala represents a mature evolution in luxury hospitality. The brand's consistent emphasis on authentic wellness and environmental stewardship, combined with Xala's low-density planning and community initiatives like the Xala Foundation, positions this venture beyond mere resort construction. It signals a sophisticated approach to creating an ecosystem where luxury is underpinned by genuine respect for its natural and cultural context, appealing to a discerning traveller seeking profound engagement over ostentation. The early residence sales suggest this considered model resonates deeply with the market.
