As soon as you pass through the gate, the hustle and bustle of the Cambodian capital gradually fades away. The picturesque tuk-tuks continue to circulate in the streets, the horns still echo in the distance, but the tropical garden, the fans turning slowly under the high ceilings, and the scent of frangipani trees create an almost unreal atmosphere.

It is immediately clear why this hotel has become one of the great legendary addresses in Asia.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal

Built in 1929, at a time when Phnom Penh was undergoing a transformation under the impetus of the French architect and urban planner Ernest Hébrard, the Raffles Hotel Le Royal was conceived as the capital's grand hotel. At its opening, it was even the tallest building in the city and hosted King Sisowath Monivong at its official inauguration. Its architecture elegantly blends French colonial influences, Art Deco touches, and Khmer inspirations—a balance that still gives it its charm today.


Over the decades, the hotel has witnessed Cambodia's greatest upheavals. It has seen the prosperous years of French Indochina, independence movements, conflicts, civil war, and then the darkest hours of the Khmer Rouge regime. Renamed several times before regaining its historical name, it was reborn in 1997 after a restoration that was particularly respectful of its heritage. Few establishments can tell the story of nearly a century of a country's history with such accuracy.

This memory is omnipresent without ever becoming oppressive. The old photographs hanging in the corridors, the precious wood furniture, the checkered floors, the monumental staircases and the wide galleries opening onto the gardens give the impression of moving about in a private residence rather than in a hotel.
