On January 20, 2026, GCL SI and Ocean Sun announced the completion of their floating solar project at the Soneva Secret resort in the Maldives. This initiative places 4,200 marine floating solar modules on the water, enabling the resort to achieve 90% clean energy.

According to SolarQuarter, this extensive solar array is projected to cut the resort's diesel consumption by 1 million liters annually. The corresponding impact on greenhouse gas emissions is a reduction of 2,000 tons of CO₂. The project leverages Ocean Sun's proprietary floating solar technology, designed for marine environments.

Our take: The Soneva brand has consistently led the charge in luxury sustainability, and this latest development at Soneva Secret further solidifies that reputation. Integrating floating solar technology not only provides a highly visible commitment to renewable energy but also addresses the unique challenges of land-scarce island nations. This isn't merely an environmental gesture; it's a critical infrastructure upgrade that enhances the resort's long-term operational resilience and appeal to the discerning, eco-conscious traveler.
